Mount Gangaharusuri

A quiet mountain located in Ōtsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture, at an elevation of 1,874 meters. This mountain, with its unique name, is a “spot offering spectacular views of Mount Fuji” known only to those in the know.

It is also known as the location where the famous photograph of Mount Fuji on the back of the old 500-yen bill was taken.

It’s perfect for those who want to enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and a quiet hike away from the crowds.

A Spectacular View of Mount Fuji

When you stand at the summit of Mt. Karigaharasuri, the majestic Mount Fuji spreads out before your eyes. On days when the air is clear, Mount Fuji appears even more vivid.

It’s also nice to spend a leisurely lunch break on the quiet summit while taking in that spectacular view.

Tranquility and Abundant Nature

This mountain attracts few hikers, and its peaceful atmosphere is part of its charm.

The trail is gentle, and walking through the moss-covered woods and beech forests is incredibly relaxing.

In the early morning, the light filtering through the deep greenery creates a truly wonderful atmosphere.

The photo was taken during my visit two years ago. That moment remains deeply etched in my memory.

About the Route

By Car

If you take the forest road from the Otsuki City side, you can drive all the way to “O-toge Pass.” From there, it takes about 1 hour to reach the summit according to the standard hiking time. This route is easy even for beginner hikers, making it a quiet mountain that’s easy to enjoy.

By Public Transportation

Take the Fujikyu Bus from “Otsuki Station” on the JR Chuo Main Line to “Hamaiba-mae,” then walk about 10 km along the forest road to Ohtoge Pass.Although it takes some time to reach the trailhead, the forest road you walk along is a pleasant path surrounded by trees. You can simply hike up and back, or if you have the energy, try the loop course that descends via Mt. Uba and Kanayama Mineral Springs back to Otsuki Station. This route is a long hike of about 24 km in total and offers plenty of walking satisfaction. You can also start from Ōtsuki Station, but considering the bus schedule for the descent, it’s safer to make the station your destination.

Points to Note

Due to the high elevation, it can get chilly on some days depending on the season, so bringing rain gear is essential.

Since there are areas without cell service, it’s a good idea to download hiking apps and maps in advance. The descent to Kanayama Kosen has some sections where the trail is unclear, so be careful not to get lost—a map is essential.Be sure to bring plenty of water and food (snacks). There is a water source at Mt. Karigaharasuri.

Mt. Karigaharasuri is a hidden gem perfect for quiet hikes during Golden Week or in the spring. This mountain offers both breathtaking views and soothing greenery—be sure to visit at least once.
